Elements and Principals of Design

Line-The linear marks made with a pen or brush or the edge created when two shapes meet


















Shape-a self contained defined area of geometric or organic form.
Direction-All lines have direction - Horizontal, Vertical or Oblique. Horizontal suggests calmness, stability and tranquillity. Vertical gives a feeling of balance, formality and alertness. Oblique suggests movement and action

Size-the relationship of the area occupied by one shape to that of another.
Texture-the surface quality of a shape - rough, smooth, soft hard glossy etc.
Color-Also called Hue


Value- the lightness or darkness of a colour.
Balance-state of equilibrium or equipoise

Gradation-process of change taking place through a series of stages ,by degree , or in gradual manner

Repetition-the act of repeating

Contrast-to compare in order to show unlikeness or difference

Harmony-relations of colour 


Dominance-condition of being dominant 


Unity-the state of being one
